There was a time when it was fashionable to dismiss Rockwell as an illustrator (often"mere illustrator") of the American Dream, and all the falsities later generations perceived in that ideal; when in art school in the 80s a fellow student of mine was horrified to be assigned Rockwell as her subject for study by the graphics department - but - as I myself found, a closer look at his work told a different story

Why did Norman Rockwell use illustration in his paintings? Rockwell did this because illustration itself is a medium meant to catch the eye and interest of a viewer spontaneously and quickly. By placing the subject in the center of the painting, Rockwell created a visually basic structure that appealed to the masses and was easily incorporated into the covers of the magazines for which he painted
